A few inches of snow, or even less, would always create a mess in Portland, Oregon. The place is hilly, many haven't driven in snow before, so there are accidents all over on the roads. Schools and businesses close at the first snowflake. The real danger is from snow melting and then water freezing on the roads.

Rain from the west falling through cold winds from the east, through the Columbia Gorge, causes freezing rain and ice storms where there's a layer of ice over everything. Nothing moves on the roads.

In western Washington the humidity is high (you people around Ohio, don't laugh). So, even at 85F I have the A/C on.

The heat does not bother me when it is 105°F in Palm Springs, because I am not there.

You all had temps close to a 100 for several days, I grew up in Wilmington, near the harbor, mild temps, but when the temps got up in the 90s and no AC, not very pleasant.

I am near the coast too so it got up to 86 degrees F.

Today, our high temperature was 107F (41.7C) humid degrees. Matched record set back in the 1880s. The same is predicted for tomorrow, if not hotter. Only got outside once today, the rest of the time have been under air conditioning which my German in-laws said we did not need until they visited us one summer. No more has been said. Having been in their homes in summer, I would advise them to buy some electric fans. Just saying it is not hot enough doesn't make it so.....Regards!

I was born in south America, New Orleans. Did you miss the small 's'. No where in the world is the thunder louder than in New Orleans. I never understood why.

Do you have a swamp cooler for your house rather than a true air conditioner with a refrigerant cycle? I have seen swamp coolers on cottages around the Salton Sea. https://worldofdecay.blogspot.com/2015/06/the-party-where-no-one-came-salton-city.html

Do any of you old-timers recall when you could buy an evaporative canvas bag (swamp-cooler) to hang in an open window on your car? They also made models to hang in front of the radiator.

Back to climate: here in Mississippi, 34 deg. C (93 deg. F) but very humid, so the weather service has posted extreme heat warnings.

It is an actual swamp cooler, not AC. The house belongs to a relative and was built long ago, at a time when swamp coolers were not uncommon there and when Palm Springs was much smaller and more modest in living conditions.

My house in Washington has true AC and needs it in the summer. However, usually it's active only in the afternoon and early evening on 85F+ degree days. In the later evening, I can open the upstairs windows and the house cools off nicely. For more cooling at night I've had the doors open -- with screen doors in place to keep insects and critters out. Two-legged critters don't invade (for obvious and less than obvious reasons). It's been that way for 24 years and we like it that way.

Pulling up this old thread, my parents live inland about 2 miles from Wrightsville Beach. They have been hammered. They're pretty old and they've been couped up in that house all through this with no conveniences at all, about out of food, and nothing is open down there to go get any, as if you could go with trees blocking the roads. It's got to be miserable. What's worse, is that my stepmother's daughter and her husband came to stay with them, and they are EXTREMELY political. I feel for my Dad. Probably left out his hearing aids, not that he're particularly hard of hearing. From what I'm told, the town got flattened pretty good.
For some reason I'm sitting here 200 miles inland watching Apollo 13 on the computer. Don't you know my family down there feels about the same way? And that stupid storm won't budge. It just sits in the same place for 2 days bringing hell off the ocean.

Yesterday, it was raining ropes and there was strong gust of wind. We received a tornado warning on T.V, nothing landed in my area, but Gatineau looked like a war zone. A F2 punched through residential areas, it pummeled 4 stories brick walled buildings like they were made of carton.

Never seen something like that around here. It’s a 2 hours ride from my town bu still.

Perfectly wonderful weather here in northern CA. Sunny, high of 71F after a chilly 46F this morning, now 60% RH. Typical light wind blowing up the Mad River Valley from the Pacific Ocean (about 6 miles away). Started my day brushing spider webs off my house, warmed by the sun rising over the hills. Breakfast, then did a little light rockwork in the backyard. Lunch is scheduled next, then it is into town for a 4-hr shift at our cooperative gallery. Rough life of the retired!

I've added a couple more rocks since I took this yesterday.

There, again, Matt, given Calgary's close proximity to the Rockies, more snow is just as likely. Checking in with the Weather Network a few minutes ago, it looks as though my planned excursion to Banff (tentatively scheduled for either the weekend of the 28th-30th of this month, or the 5th-7th of next), is in doubt. The Hasselblads and a supply of E100G and PanF+ may be headed to either the Sunshine Coast, or the northern part of the Island instead.
