I have my darkroom set up in my basement, and use our tap water for mixing chemicals, rinsing prints, etc. While I haven't noticed a material impact on outcomes, our water quality is pretty poor..lots of sediment, periodic rust, etc., which noticably settles in containers when sitting for a while.

Can anyone suggest an effective water filtration system to solve for this? Ideally whole house, so that we can personally benefit as well?

Many thanks, Jim

Whole house filters are available from the big home centers, as well as other sources. The units are around 50.00 USD give or take, and the replaceable cartridges are 20 - 30 USD. These filter minimum particle sizes ranging from 5 microns to 25 microns.
Cartridges are good for about 3 months.
We have an "Omni Filter" that I installed on the incoming water line.
It seems to work OK. The other problem in my water is the desolved mineral content which causes scale in my tankless hot water heater. The scale gets released into the hot water supply since there is no tank for it to collect and settle in.
I'm looking into filters that can deal with hot water now.
To get rid of desolved minerals you need to resort to some form of water softening. There are undersink units for around 150 USD and whole house units that range from about 300 USD and up. For whole house water softening, I'd recommend Kinetico units which are pricey, but use the less salt than most and don't require an external power source.

Here is one online source for filters and information, I don't know much about them however.

Hi Jim, try taking a look at this site.
http://www.ohiopurewaterco.com

There is a product help link that may be of some assistance to you. I use their products and they are great. I have a cistern and collect rain water, and after putting in place the proper filters, our water is as good as aquafina!!
