I've shared one source in post #33, Ian listed another, and I think he explained why it is the case. Unfortunately, I cannot scan the Photo Techniques article as it would be a copyright violation, but I'm sure Martin Reed at Silverprint or Photo Techniques Magazine may be able to help.

However, I don't think this is a new discovery.

If you have HT2 and access to soft and hard water, you could do your own test.

There's not a lot written about it outside technical journals/research papers. Best is wash with the local hard water then a couple of soaks/rinses in soft, demin or distilled water. But we are talking extremes.

An APUG members wife filled our kettle with tap water (last week and it was destroyed Well my wife would think so That's how bad hard water can be, draw a bath leave 10 mins and there's a Calcium scum. but there's always ways around these problems. I now do two final soaks/rinses in our drinking water, it's OK no issues at all but it's still not soft by the standards I was used tom in the UK

Luckily they sell dilute HCl every where as the Calcium is such a huge problem and the Kettle's now better than ever

Ralph, I could not find the article on line or archived, however, as suggested, contacted them for more info, if available. Testing is a good idea although this did not occur to me, I will give it a try.

Ian, your welcome to visit anytime, how about a taking a rowboat for the return trip and save some money. However, I will pass on the lancing of the boil, no one would recognize me without it so you will have to find something else to do for entertainment.

Anyway, in thinking about washing fiber based prints in hard water, I wonder if the hard water would stain the print. I cannot test this aspect right now, however, may try it later when I can.

I don't think hard water will stain the prints but when I'm in the UK the water supply varies. The town draws from local boreholes which is very hard water or when lucky Welsh water which is soft from the Birmingham water supply, often it's a mix of both.

So it is important to swab off all water before a print dries, I either use kitchen paper or 2 old clean towell I keep specially for this purpose, a car wiper blade works as well, otherwise water droplets dry leaving slight patchy calcium marks on the emulsion surface.

Or just water softened in a de-ioniser, the Britta jug type or equivalent are cheap.
