Warmtone Fiber With White Base

Can anyone recommend a WT fiber paper with a white base? I am familiar with Oriental WT, Ilford MG WT, Ilford Galeria, EMAKS Graded, and Foma.

The new paper is called Adox Variotone, and it's precisely that--a warmtone emulsion on a white base. Wolfgang Moersch has posted some examples in the gallery, but if you don't have gallery access, I think there are some on Freestyle's website.

I have used Bergger and it is variable contrast. It is now very fast though, and I still like the Illford better. The Bergger is less expensive.

Thanks for the replies. Adox Premium VC FB is backordered at Freestyle.

The suggested Kentmere paper has a very white base but is not a warmtoned emulsion.

Can anyone compare Bergger Prestige VCCB to another paper so I have an idea of its characteristics. My base paper was Forte Polywarmtone Plus.

Bergger has a premium price and I understand it is coated in UK. Also, what safe light is required for this paper?

Bergger info says red safelight.

I just picked up a lot of this paper in 11x14 and haven't printed it yet except for a small step wedge to determine speed and contrast.

I have preferred Agfa MC Classic and Portriga papers but I must say that a print I did on Bergger just exceeded all my previous efforts. The brilliance of the image was almost startling. I wish I had a stash of it, but as it is, I stocked up on the Agfa a few years ago before it became extinct so I'll keep on truckin with it for now.

Shelly, are you saying the Begger paper has a short scale as opposed to the fairly long scale of Ilford MGIV? How is the mid tone separation?

The Bergger base is just a tad warmer when compared with Ilford MGIV, and is about 1 3/4 to 2 stops slower. At Grade 2, the scale seems to be about the same.

Bergger also makes (or made) a beautiful semi-matt version which has a bit longer scale, and a beautiful warmtone base leaning toward the cream end of the spectrum.

Hi,
The papers on the cream base are indicated by the word "style" in the description. For an accurate list of what's available (in the US) you might contact John at Bergger (sales@bergger.com) and ask. My experience with the warm tone (VCCB) was that the highlight curve was noticeably different than the Ilford.

I haven't printed with it yet, just ran a step wedge...that's the breadth of my experience with it at the moment. Hope to make some prints within the next two weeks...

ok, so i think i started the whole bergger vs. illford thing. I use Bergger and find it very nice, when I said it was slower I meant the value range is the same, but often my exposure is longer for the same effect. Price wise it is a good deal. I just wish I had stocked up with Agfa before Protiga disappeared. That is what I am still searching for with other papers, that beautifull 118.

I can't describe it but I suppose the increase in both local contrast and the ability to show subtle detail in the shadows is enhanced in the prints. I will try to figure out how to digitally reproduce and send an image here but I'm lame with the procedure so be patient...

Run the Ilford MGIV WT FB through some selenium toner. It looses a lot of the cream/yellow tint to the base and becomes almost neutral. try it.

DVIA, I need to learn to use step-tablets. Can you discuss the tonal distribution of Bergger Prestige VCCB WT vs Ilford MGIV WT or Oriental WT. My negatives print best when a paper separates shadow and midtones similar to Agfa Multicontrast. Currently I am using Oriental WT and EMAKS graded with Dektol. Oriental seems to separate the low tones better than MGIV WT fiber however Ilford MGIV WT has more highlight printing headroom.
