I have TEA, Proplene Glycol, Phenidone, Vitamin C, Borax, Washing Soda, and Sodium Sulfite.

I'd like basic paper and film developer recipes. The recipe sections seem to be under construction. I'm sure I can find PC-TEA on Google, but I'm also looking for a TEA or Glycol-based paper developer.

Thanks,
Mike

I've got two TEA based paper developer recipes that I'll dig out and PM to you some time this weekend. One is a Cold Tone Paper Developer, the other is a Warm Tone Paper Developer.

You might consider adding Metol to your stock of chemicals.

PC-TEA works pretty well as a paper developer. You can add some sulfite to the working solution for longer tray life. Make it twice as strong as for film, about 1+20 or so.

Tom, any chance you could send me the cold tone too?

thanks

Mike

Sure Mike, I'll be glad to pm you my cold tone paper developer recipe. If anyone else would like a copy, pm me.

Hi to all, I'm also looking to make the same brews. I'm having difficulty sourcing both the TEA and proplene glycol in Western Australia. Any suggestions as to a supplier? There is an X-TOL equivalent called Mytol which uses similar chemicals to those that you have, Mike.

Propylene glycol has some use among cattlemen, but I can't remember what it is. It should not be on any kind of controlled substance list, as it is used in medicines as an inert, or nearly inert, solvent. You can do without the TEA by using a second alkali component as is done in the Pyrocat developers. In my original article in Photo Techniques, I had a recipe for PC-Glycol. All the Pyrocat series developers can be put up in glycol.

You could make a solution in glycol of the developing agents found in Xtol or Mytol and a separate solution in water of the other ingredients. The developing agents are in most need of the protection of the organic solvent. Sulfite, carbonate, metaborate, bromide, etc last quite a while in water solution and in any case, may be made in quantities small enough to be used before they go bad but large enough to be convenient.

My first experiments used automobile antifreeze as solvent. It contains other ingredients beside the glycol, but they seemed to have little or no effect on development.

In Melbourne I bought TEA from a manufacturer of specialist lubricants. It's also used in detergents and home made soaps, but I had a little trouble finding someone who would sell less than 25Litres (or was it 50 Litres?).

Propylene glycol I bought from a refrigeration company (commercial coolstore sort of stuff).

I bought some here in NZ from Merck. They have offices over your way. The only trouble you may have is getting smaller quantities. I got 5 litres, as that was what they had in stock (although they do have stock numbers for smaller amounts).

I did later find these guys stock smaller quantities, and it looks like they have an Aussie site. In fact, they even have a location in WA:
West Australia
Nuplex Specialty (APS)
16-18 Coulson Way
Canning Vale WA 6155
Phone: +61-8-94551972

For Phenidone, I have just ordered from Artcraft. Speaking to another Kiwi Apugger, there seem to be no real problems in getting stuff sent over.

Hope this helps

Paul
