Vulcanoid, use em or loose em?

When I wasn't looking for any, two came with purchases, cameras. Then I wanted one and couldn't find one under a hundred dollars. I gave it up then found two more that no one wanted, so I got them for minimum plus shipping. Now I find myself pulling the guts, cloth glued to the innards, of one that is small and will make a fine case for small holders or a field camera, holders and lenses. I usually use a backpack though.

Anyone use them other than storage? I have a Busch 23 that came with one, original case, and a Calumet 4x5 I've had for a long time that has the original case. It seems that Vulcanoid isn't made any longer, an old way of making boxes. They are nice looking older pieces of equipment.

I regularly use Vulcanoid and also leatherette or fabric covered wood cases to store and transport some of my large format cameras and accessories. They work just fine. I also find that soft gym bags are good and cheap to carry a bunch of loaded film holders on a trip.

I use one to store my 4x5 press cam with holders, changing bag, miscellaneous crap, and a spare box of film. The other one stores plate holders, film boxes and doo dads that scatter.

Keeping both around means you can use them as book ends.

They are useful for reducing clutter and as you say "book ends".

Vulcanoid coases are light, strong and were cheap to produce. I never understood why they went out of production. I like them for transporting cameras in the car as well as storage. Wish I had more.

Oh and mine cleaned up nicely using "Mother's Pre-Wax Cleaner." That is if you like battleship grey.
