Is it OK to use a Vivitar 2800 flash with a Minolta X700 or X370. Someone gave me the flash. I tested it off of the camera. Just want to be sure before I use it.
Thanks,
David

I seem to recall that a 2800 flash is of the same vintage as these cameras.

These cameras are good with older higher voltage flash rigs. I ran an old pre low voltage Vivitar 283 in my now defunct (went for a swim by accident) x700 for many years.

Also ran a pair of vivitars with the x-370/570/700 series cameras with a dm/m module to allow TTL flash control of the vivitar 4000 and 5000 series flash. Exact model numbers I no longer recall.

erm from this link I wouldn't use it on my X700 but only my srt101b mechanical camera, which is tougher. But it's your call as it might be ok.

Btw I use a Nissin 10v trigger volt flashgun for non Canon MF 35mm film cameras, all my others are Canon flashguns for canon cameras, and are about 7v trigger.

Before digital appeared and this sync. voltage myth was created, people used to use any flash available with their cameras without a single thought about compatibility or problems with high voltages.

Obviously it's your choice but I would use it without worrying about it.

I used a 2800 on my XG-M's for years. I would think it should feel right at home on your 370 or 700, whichever.

erm so you don't mind using any flash with any film camera.....well the dedicated flash for my Canon T90 is the 300tl and the engineers decided the trigger volts should be about 4v-6v, knowing this I will not use any flashgun without checking it's somewhere near, and even if it's being paranoid why take a chance.

I have a Vivitar 2800 which I use mostly on Canon cameras. For the Minolta X-700 I prefer the Minolta 360PX or 280PX. The 360PX is tall enough that redeye is usually not a problem with on camera use. I like using the 280PX with a Vertaflip bracket. These flash units give you TTL flash metering and the 360PX also gives you swivel and bounce finctions. Recently I had a shutter problem with one of my X-700s so I shot flash pictures with a Canon EF and a Vivitar 2800. The results were fine. The 2800 should work properly on your X-700 too.
