visiting Dublin. Any suggestions?

At the end of August I hope to be attending a meeting in Dublin and to stay on for a couple of days to do some photography.

I would like to do some landscape/coastscapes (monochrome) but I do not want to go on any long bus journeys and I do not drive. I am fine with the train.

I am a bit jittery photographing in cities in the UK, being rather shy & retiring by nature but if anyone has any advice for interesting photography (sorry to be so vague) in Dublin itself I would love to hear.

Dublin is a very pedestrian friendly city. It is crowded by comparison to the rest of the county but , the people are lovely. There is so much to see and do that one would hardly find time in five weeks to take it all in.

Photographically, everywhere along the river seems like an opportunity - especially at sun rise.

Dublin is also the hub of the train system for the country. It seems that one can travel almost anywhere in Ireland by train from Dublin.

If anything go and see the Book of Kells in Trinity Library and the Tara Brough. Both utterly spectacular.

There are lots of places accessible by train, and lots more to photograph without ever leaving the city..
If you can give me a better idea of what you're hoping to see/photograph, I'd be happy to suggest some places within easy reach of the Dart line (Dublin Area Rapid Transit)?

This is not certain yet as I have to get approval from work to attend a 2 day conference at Dublin City University ( 4km from the city centre). If it goes ahead then I will probably have the Friday evening and all day Saturday 30th August to myself flying back to Newcastle UK on Sunday (have to be back at my desk on Monday )

I am doing a lecture at my camera club in January and I want to have something of my trip to Ireland in it. I guess what I am after are a few alternative suggestions so I can decide which to do if this goes ahead.

So any suggestions for photogenic opportunities would be welcomed (e.g. buildings, people, beaches, landscapes with rocks, ruins). I will be armed with 35 mm HP5 (and a camera).

Dublin Bay itself is rather photogenic - Sandymount is a good area to start. Wicklow Mountains south of Dublin. Killarney. All close to Dublin.

If you're in DCU then you'll be close to Clontarf and Killester DART stations. From here you can get to the city centre and plenty of people, old buildings,
bridges and the docklands. Or you can keep going on South to Dun Laoghaire with beautiful harbour and buildings.
Stay on the DART even longer and you reach Dalkey originally a viking settlement, then on to Killiney a pebbled beach in a gorgeous bay.
Still going south you reach Bray (of which I may be a bit biased in my opinion) with it's Victorian promenade, bandstand, cliff walk, pebbled beach,
swan filled harbour and some very pleasant natives
The DART stops in Greystones another quaint little town.
There are some beautiful places to see if you want to leave the city and a 3 day go anywhere ticket on the DART is just €16.10.
If you do make it out this way there are a few of us Appugers living in Wicklow, and you never know we might even be tempted to go for a pint

In Dublin Centre on foot there are loads of great places to photograph:

Both people and urban scenes and all within 15 minutes walk maximum in any direction, people generally do not mind photographs being taken and are not agressive, for street performers Grafton Street and nightlife try Temple Bar and Wicklow Street areas.

Along the river for scenic shots and also good shots can be obtained from the rooftops of some inner city car parks. Every weekend there is some kind of protests or carnival.

It is literally a case of wander about till something takes your fancy. The bridges are all underlight in the Irish colours of Green, White & Gold

Follow the river down the north quay walls until the harbour opens up and there are great morning shots their at sunrise.

The best public parks for shots are St Stephens Green, Merrion Square and Phoenix Park. All in walking distance.

Finally remember it is IRELAND so don't be afraid to ask security guards or others can you get access to their property or stand on their heads etc. to get better shots, they are not so uptight here and far more friendly and more than likely will let you

there are a lot of hidden gems in dublin city there is a podcast called 'hidden dublin' which has some interesting stuff. landscape wise in dublin itself howth head has something to offer,the deer park walk and the red rock walk may both be of interest to you there are secluded beachs,rocks and arboretums.
if you rent a car and drive an hour from dublin there county wicklow, places of interest are lugalla,glendalough,lough dan,avondale, brittas bay ,sally's gap, the vale of clara, camaderry and the wicklow gap etc all of this is very beautiful but you'll need deet because the boglands and mountains are full of midges.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have just got back from my 5 days in Dublin (2 at a conference). On day 1 I was in Iveagh gardens taking my first few shots when the shutter jammed up on my Minolta MD camera. With no back-up (stupid I know but I wanted to travel light) that was it as far as photography was concerned, several rolls of HP5 would have to remain unexposed. However, I decided to take a 'toy camera' approach and bought a single use point and shoot plastic camera from a chemists shop and await the results from the lab with hope rather than expectation!

I did enjoy a big photo exhibition on the railings around St Stephens Green and got to see some analogue work. Were there any apugers exhibiting?

For the record I particularly enjoyed the Botanical Gardens and the old cemetary in Glasnevin where I was staying. Unfortunately the sun only got out whilst I was at the conference and when I was waiting for the airport bus on the Swords road!

That was Summer!

(Every day I've ever spent in Ireland, regardless of the supposed season, it has rained. I once spent a week by the sea in Kerry during in August and it never stopped raining, at least whilst I was awake)

Sorry to hear about your camera trouble and the rain. We've had quite a bit recently but I have to say the the colours of the landscape after the rain is just magical, lovely vivid and luminous green fields, purple magenta and golden orange sunsets. Everything is so crisp afterwards, it was this evening.

Yes! I managed to blag my way into a spot on the Sunday. B&W prints ... very close to the smelly horses and taxis. Even managed to sell two prints. Glad you enjoyed your trip to Dublin .....
