Excuse my ignorance but I just ordered someone's stash of super 8 film on ebay as they were "going digital." I noticed that there are no expiration dates on the vision2 films. There is only what I assume to be an emulsion batch number 013 0231. Is there a way to match those numbers with a specific batch of film so I can know how good this film is?
Motion picture film is ordered directly from Kodak, not pulled from a retailers shelf. You can trust Kodak not to send out dodgy MP stock. It's not usually around long enough to come close to "expiring". If we have short ends, re-cans, or old film around that is intended to be used on something for some odd reason, we usually have a snip test made to test the performance of the stock. I won't generally shoot stock that is more than a year or so old without a snip test for something that matters, and I'll whine even at that over new stock, because a lot of time, effort, and money (not to mention my a$$) is usually on the line.
