Going home for thanksgiving meant that a tour to the myriad thrift shops of Topeka was inevitable.
One such shop, Lloyd Zimmer's Books & Maps - Rare & Collectible, had quite a few photography gems, and here they are for your perusal.
1 - Graphic Graflex Photography - The Master Book for the Larger Camera, Morgan & Lester (1954)
400 page book in nearly flawless condition, missing dust-jacket (I'm guessing). Discusses everything Graflex while covering a host of basic camera fundamentals, darkroom techniques & so forth. Lots of illustrations, some color plates and advertisements in the back.
2 - 35mm Photography with an Exakta, The Fountain Press (1952)
126 page book in great condition that seems to be a basic introduction to SLR photography and the virtues of Exakta cameras. It appears to be something of a veiled advertisement for Exakta while at the same time a basic introduction to photography (undoubtedly aimed at people who could afford an Exakta in the 50's and yet had no idea what to do with it). Nonetheless, some interesting illustrations including some surprisingly graphic "surgical photography". 1 killer Exakta advertisement at the back.
3 - Kodachrome and Ektachrome - From All Angles, Camera Craft Publishing Co. (1947)
240 page book in good condition by Fred Bond (brother of James), save for a worn dust-jacket and 1 page that has come loose. The rest of the book is very solid, and includes a number of color plates printed on a different paper stock that are quite excellent; mid-century color off-set in all its glory! (or is it gravure?..) Discusses color photography in general and touches on processing Ektachrome, etc.
All told I think these books represent an interesting era of photography literature and they're in very good shape. All 3 books are stamped J.E. Collingwood, 2601 Virginia Ave., Topeka, Kansas; who sure enough, according to Mr. Zimmer, was a commercial photographer in Topeka during the era.
$16 a piece, plus $1 shipping per book. Or keep the set together for $45, shipped. Offers are always welcome as well; trade or otherwise.
