View Camera magazine is creating a space on our web site for images from largeformat photographers. Here are the rules

-anyone can submit an image. The camera must be 6x9 or larger. In the image area you must include the edges of the film. If you want the image cropped indicate so on the image
-files must be smaller than 125K and should be in .jpg format
-anything deemed pornographic will be deleted
-you can include up to 50 words of info - location, camera, lens, film type, exposure, filters, etc.
-if you want direct feedback include your e-mail address
-any antagonistic comments will be deleted and a second offense here will result in the elimination of all of your images and your opportunity to post anything else on the site

send images after March 8 to ViewCameraArt@aol.com

Once a year we will go through and publish the best images in View Camera magazine

I'm assuming that the need for the film edges is to prove that a view camera was used. But not too many people make prints with the film edges included. A scanner that can handle film well can do it, but not everyone has one of those either. I think the requirement for the film edges would greatly limit the amout of images posted. How bout just taking the posters word for it that it was made on a LF cam? Just a suggestion.

It's not hard to add fake digital film edges to shots from your favorite digicam. Three notches Hassy style, 8x10" sheet film holder, platinum/palladium brushstrokes, sloppy Polaroid, they're all out there...

Despite the logistical problems with authenticating images as LF or not, I think it's a nice gesture by Steve. It will add to his work load I'm sure but give LF photographers another media outlet for their work.

I for one do not have a scanner that does an adequate job of scanning 4x5.

EricR, I think you are right, Steve has added to his workload, and since it is a LF gallery, one would not want a lot of smaller format images on it. Good job Steve, there will be many thoughts on this, some worth listening to, some not.

Hmf.
This probably means that I'll have to change the glass in my negative carriers, as the glassless inserts crop out the film edges. I could of course scan the negative instead of the print, but that would not represent the finished picture. Or shoot slide film? Nah.

why not make a contact print and then scan that? This makes a strong case for getting the image correct when shooting the image and not relying on cropping at the enlarger.

rather not, huh? Hey, it was just a suggestion, take what you will and leave the rest. I don't have anyway to scan but that is how I would do it. Maybe I can get Jeremy to re-scan some stuff later.

I personally do not find your rules limiting or unreasonalbe. It is after all VIEW Camera magazine. I would love to participate.

One of my cameras is a 6x8 format with most the movements of it's larger kin. Does this mean it's negs are excluded?

Instead of doing a "view camera" gallery, why not do a "camera arts" gallery that does not exclude anyone?

Thank you! Now to find an appropriate image...

The reason I don't want to contact print (my 4x5" negatives) is that I feel it doesn't give me enough control in the burning/dodging stage. I have negatives that don't need it, but none that can't be improved by a little burning. The situation might be different if I used 8x10" or even larger, but I still stop at 5x7". Prints from 5x7" could actually be made with a little border, as my negative holder is for 13x18cm...

No, I'll stop that discussion right now: Some prefer contact printing, some prefer a little space between the negative and the paper. Some will even make "enlaged" prints at 1:1 to make the burn&dodge easier

what about prints made from dry plates or paper negatives that were shot in a large format camera (4x5 - 8x10)?

I am "into" ap so that I have control. I do not wish to allow cropping by a third party.

I can live with this.

I agree - a good requirement IMO.
