very high ISO

next weekend, I have a job to shoot a retro band in a club. the light there is terrible and they have no room for me to bring lights.However, I expect a fairly even am bent light; just very dim. My question is: not being to concerned about noise(grain) I intend just to crank up the ISO on my D800 until it fits.How high have you ever cranked up the ISO on your camera and still got a decent shot?

I have crank the ISO on my Df to up 12800 and it's acceptable to me. Now since you're an expert can you tell us what is the light level there? What LV would you be expect to set your camera at?

Is there really no room for lights? A stand-mounted powerful speedlight with a wireless trigger will add quite a bit of light, with a reasonably small footprint. A 360 diffuser will have the effect of increasing the light by bouncing it off all surfaces. I have done similar in the past, and was recently at an indoor event where the photographer used this solution.

The speedlight (or larger unit like a Sunpak 622 Pro or Metz 60) can be positioned near camera position with a diffuser or bare bulb. Another option is to position the light to camera left or right, with the normal, directional, head pointed at the subject. The first solution is a more ambient and softer effect, the other is more directional and harder.

I have 2008 made Canon 500D. Its maximum ISO is 12800.
I do not hesitate to use it.



I use 6400 regularly.
It is common high iso scare sindrom. I have seen it at forums for decade.
But most of the DSLR or any normal sensor size cameras will provide decent image as long as you are matching ISO and light.
People are using MFT cameras now at ISO 12800.

Decades ago I sometimes shot USO shows overseas with a 500mm f/8 mirror lens on Kodak 2475 film rated at ISO 1600 and a small on-camera flash at 1/10 second. The ambient light dominated, with the flash helping the shadows and providing sharp specular highlights to give an illusion of sharpness.
