Can anyone in the Bay Area tell me whatever happened to Brooks Cameras in Kearny St., San Francisco? When did they close down? They had disappeared in 2009 when I was last in SF. I used to work there in the early/mid sixties before I left for Australia. Just curious, I guess.

They closed in late '07, as I recall. I've seen somewhere around the internet pictures of Sammy Davis Jr. in there buying stuff in the 60's or 70's.

About the closing and some of the history...http://www.sturm.to/blog2/archives/287

I certainly recall that the Brooks Cameras of the 1960's was very very different than the Brooks Cameras of the 1990's. I often visited in the 1960s. My visit in the 1990's seemed to garner not nearly the same level of respect from me, in large part due to the massive window displays of awe inspiring gear had diminished greatly in scope, it almost seemed like the toursit trap stores!

Thanks for the memories guys! I thought they were gone when I was in SF in 2006. There was some discount camera shop on the other side of Maiden Lane at the time. I wasn't a salesman. I worked below ground in the basement doing various jobs. I did emerge once in time to see Jerry Lewis hanging around. Sigh, it was a San Francisco that seemed long gone when I was last there. No more Herb Caen in the Chronicle and the pace of life seemed much more frenzied. Maybe it is those rose coloured glasses.
