Going through my darkroom kit I find there are two different versions of the 67 diffusion boxes:

The box on the left is the only one I have with the extra density, the 35mm box and 4"x5" are the same as the box on the right.

Any thoughts?

I've used 5 or 6 different 500 Multigrade set ups over the years at different labs and have never seen a mixing box with anything other than a white diffuser. My best guess is that someone made one so they could use longer exposuers at small magnifications - printing 5X7's for example?

Perhaps, considering a 6"x9" print from a 35mm negative takes <10s to expose with the 4"x5" box in place.

I had a 500 system some years back and none of the mixing chambers/boxes had anything but a white diffuser.

My boxes are all with a white diffuser!
I have no idea at all what your "black" box could have been used for...

Never seen one that had anything other than a white diffuser.

Does your Mutigrade come with a time control box?
