Learning yir scriptures? I vaguely recall a 1950s series on BBC which involved a young Cockney geezer in the 19th century accompanying a Scotsman in his native land. Looking for lodging late one night in some small but deeply religious Calvinistic community the Scotsman warns the lad to be on his best behaviour
The prospective landlady is carefully sizing them up before granting lodging for the night and asks the young geezer if he "knows his scriptures"
He says: "Of course" and continues in a chirpy Cockney way with: "Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, bless the bed that I lie on". The landlady replies: "Aye, yir a Godless bairn right enough but I'll show mercy and gie ye a bed for the nicht"
