I find that VueScan and a 8200i work very well with E100 and Provia, but struggle with Velvia for some reason. My work-around for that is to scan with no color correction, or with "neutral" color correction and then load the images into PhotoShop and use the "levels" tool (command-L). Looking at the histograms, the problem seems to be that the "black point" for the red channel is not at zero. By selecting the red channel and moving the far left control so that the leftmost portion of the curve reaches the far left of the window, this generally fixes the issue.
I have done it so often that it comes naturally to me, but I may not have described it well. This one tiny correction is much easier that playing with curves.
