V500 scanner

I am trying to scan some 6cm X 6cm black & white negatives on an Epson Perfection V500 scanner. It tells me it cant do this in auto mode and on other modes it sometimes cant recognise where the negative starts or ends and freezes during a scan. Does anyone have one on these machines, who could advise me the best way to scan 6 X 6

If you're using the Epson software you have to set it to 6x6 neg size. I think it's under advanced settings or something. Unless you set a size for the MF film size it will always try to look for 35mm sized negs and not work right.

In the Epson Scan window, choose Professional Mode. At the bottom of the window click Configuration... which will open another window. Click the Film Size tab and select 6x6 in the pull down menu, and click OK.
Now go back to the Epson Scan window and select Document Type, Film Type, Image Type, and Resolution. Next, Preview so you can see your images. Now Scan and select your file's destination, name, and type of file, e.g. Jpeg. In 6x6, you can scan two frames at once. Oh yeah, check the Thumbnail button beneath Preview so you can check your images before scanning. In the Preview window, you will get 2 thumbnail images. You can view them larger individually, but when you are ready to scan, you must return to thumbnail view, then go back to the Epson Scan window and click scan.

khalsa gave you good information but remember that many time the EpsonScan software will "guess" wrong on the cropping. In that case you want to uncheck the thumbnail option and manually crop in order to make sure you get the whole image.

I have found this to be true for the Epson software too. I think the thumbnail automatic crops are more geared toward 35mm color negative film strips than any other format, and with other formats, like 6x6, I find that the software gets confused and crops the image area incorrectly.

If it's imperative to get exactly the whole frame, I use the feature where the software brings up a magnified view of the thumbnail. It's easier to do adjustments in the software at that point, and prefer to have a lot of it done, saving as little as possible to post processing in Photoshop or Lightroom.

I usually scan 6x7cm and 35mm negatives and will on occasion (but infrequently) get a weird crop. I'll have to try the manual way, thanks.
