I´m in Mexico City and am trying to construct a UV light box for pt-pd printing. I plan on following the guide in the book by sullivan. However, i{M confused as to which lamps to buy. They are surely available here, however the catalogue number given in the book wouldn´'t really do me any good. Should I just look for blacklight fluorescent lights? What wattage? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
John

John, if they are the 24 inch (2 feet) bulbs, yes one of the blacklight flourescent lights should work - they would be BLB and may be marked T12, 40 watt. Hope this helps.

Be sure to note if they will match the ballast you used for the box.

I build an UV-light-box a few week ago and tested it with cianotypes......
I used 'black light's' witch used 20 watt ( modern low energy bulbs) and they ware originally intended to be used for 'disco-light'... I used 4 bulbs, put them in a metal-box (from Ikea) and that was it.....
Exposure time with B/W negative is about 12-15 min and with a digital negative (green) about 7-10 min.....
I found some bulbs in USA for 110v (on ebay) but have to get them from Germany, as we use 220 v here in denmark......

Wanted to correct my previous post, the 24 inch T12 (F20/T12) BLB bulbs are 20 watt, the F40/T12 BLB bulbs (48 inch) are 40 watt.

Another method of UV production (USE CAUTION)

Mercury vapor and metal halide (especially metal halide) produce a great deal of uv-a, uv-b, uv-c when they are running, allot of it especially the UV-c is filtered out by the bulb itself, now if your wondering how to get around the filter, here is how. Use a fixture that uses the type of bulb that has a small glass tube inside of the actuall bulb (not white frosted bulbs) carefully remove by filling or cutting the glass outer bulb from the light bulb itself leaving the inner glass tube intact, you can do this by filling away at the glass bulb, and breaking it in sections, or with a pair of leather gloves to protect yourself, use a wet saw, or a dremel tool with a diamond coated steel cutting wheel.
Now you have a small glass tube, that usually contains a small ammount of a liquid metal inside, clean teh surface with rubbing alcohal, and keep your hand off of it (just like a tungsten halogen bulb), DO NOT BREAK THIS TUBE!!! it contains things like mercury, or thallium, or thollium. all are toxic heavy metals. Screw the modified bulb back into the fixture, and you have a massive UV A,B,C generator. UV-C damges skin and eyes very quickly!!! do not exposure yourself to the bulbs output without protective clothing or confining the light to a shielded box!.
We once created a device like this, and modified the fixture to mount on a tripod, with a long extension and switched time 'o ' lite timer of the other end. A friend of mine bought a house, then found out the previous owner had contracted MRSA (Methicillian resistant Staph aureus) infection and had lived with it in the house for severla years before having to finally be admitted to a containment ward for aggressive treatment. We cleaned the carpets, and scrubbed the walls with BORAX and WATER several times, then irradiated the rooms for 45 minutes each with the UV-C generator. Afterwards you could smell massive ammounts of OZONE in each room after we shut down and opened the rooms. the A/C ductwork was cleaned as well, and a UV sterilizer was installed infront of the evaporator coils as well.
