Using the "Old" Ries A100

I just recieved my new "Old" Ries A100 tripod (thanks Ryan) and wanted to make sure I'm setting it up correctly. The leg locks seem to consist of metal "grippers" with a tounge that sticks upwards and slightly outwards. I assume you simply set the desired leg angle, slide the grippers up until the tounge touches the head of the tripod and tighten them down - thus not allowing the leg to further spread. Is that correct?

Also, is there anything you would recomend to use between the metal "gripper" and the wood that might lessen the impact of the teeth on the leg itself? Thanks in advance. Shawn

Oh !! The Tri-Loc contraption---awful isn't it---the knob type version is so much better !!

Yep, you got it. The nice thing about the tri-lock is you can swing the forward leg a bit left or right to help level. The knob version won't allow that.

Thanks for the confirmation fellows. I'm going to refinish the wood and wonder if anyone has come up with a way to protect it from the "teeth" of the aluminum clamps. I was thinking about leather pads or maybe coating the clamps with the rubber seal used on tool handles...

Yea !! You can just loosen the knob and level it right up !! I had a Tri-Loc Ries--HAD !!!!
