Using a PC/laptop in the darkroom?

The DeVere 'digital enlarger' is controlled by a PC in the darkroom. It uses an LCD screen, probably turned low, with a hinged sheet of Wratten safelight filter across the front - I've used it and there's been no problem with paper fogging.

Sorry. Most folks use windows. There's no /dev/anything.

Tragedy, but reality.

I use a Mac because my life if full enough without having to wet nurse a cobbled together operating system.

At one time I did use a computer to in the darkroom. I didn't use the PC to directly control the timing. I use a Programmable controller to do this as it has plenty of inputs and outputs. The PLC is then connected to the PC via the serial port. I would use the PC to calculate exposure time and then automatically send the new time setting to the PLC. I needed it because I need to have 4 different exposure time set to the timer. I then make 4 different prints of 4 different negs on a single sheet of 8x10 paper. I actually had 4 different start buttons to start each of the timer. To prevent the light from the monitor I close the lid of the laptop once it sets the time value to the PLC. I do RA4 printing so any light is bad.
