I have heard that Bronica SQ-family 220 film backs can accept 120 film inserts.

Those 220 film backs are, unforuntately, much more plentiful than 220 film is these days. As a result many SQ-A and SQ-Ai kits at KEH an Ebay come equipped with the (essentially useless) 220 backs. 120 inserts are, however, quiite plentiful.

Are there any disadvantages to using a Bronica 120 film insert in a 220 back, such as increased chance of light leaks, diminished film flatness, greater mechanical wear, etc?

Thanks

Nope...the backs don't normally come labelled 220...they are the same back as the 120. Only the insert is different. K

The back is 'universal' and take both 120 and 200 inserts.

Hey, go ahead and send me your totally useless 220 inserts. I'll dispose of them for you!

Try to get 220-i backs. They have a much more conveniently-placed ISO dial than the straight 220 backs that are older.

The 120/220-i inserts have a foldable crank for manual winding, which is nice. The 120/220 (old) inserts have a folding key which is less convenient but still usable. As a result you can get older 120 inserts and insert them into 220-i backs and get 90% of the benefit of a full 120-i back.
