Uses for light fogged FB paper?

Since I live outside the US, and some places don't send directly to Brazil, I use the services of a freight forwarder.

I got a 500 sheet box of 8X10 FB paper from Evilbay, and sent it to them. Now, there is an option to get detailed pictures from the contents. I foolishly let this on for this package, and for some reason they felt like photographing the sheets in two stacks of roughly the same size. All ruined.

Is there an alternative use for these poor sheets? Base for some alt-process after fixed out?? Is there any hope at all for the sheets in the middle?

Use it to made photograms. Place interesting objects on it and expose to sunlight until the paper turns dark. Man Ray and Lazlo Moholy-Nagy made some very famous ones.

Doesn't the OP mean that all his sheets have been exposed to light as he uses the word "ruined". If this is the case can he make photograms out of paper that once developed will turn totally black?

Maybe I have missed something? It won't be the first time

If it's totally fogged, you can make chemigrams. Just use a brush with developer to "paint" on the paper. Then, stop and fix.

FB paper can be fixed and used for carbon transfer prints. That said, I don't think anyone would pay much for it. It might cost more to ship 500 sheets than it's worth.

Well I assume it's all fogged, since they took it all out of the box and made two piles of it. I had a smaller accident with a 25 sheet box of 4X6 Slavich paper. I thought the light proof envelope was sealed and oversize like on the Foma paper I'm used to. But nope, it was open. All fogged, I tested. So going by that, I'd say it's all gone.



I'm still not over it, that for me is a years worth of perfectly good paper to waste.

Chemigrams do sound cool though.

Could you not get your money back from the freight company that did this? I would assume that photographing the contents would be photographing the boxes, not opening them up and photographing what's inside. Do you have the paper now? It might be possible that some sheets in the middle are salvageable. If not, it's looks like alt processes are your best bet.

I thought the same, and contacted the company then. They said that "there were no explicit warnings about light sensitivity on the outside" and that I should have disabled the option for the photos, since they did what I had asked them to do, no refund will be granted.... they did not open any other paper boxes I've sent them in the past and have sent me photos of them WITHOUT opening them...

Seller cannot be blamed for not putting extra big DO NOT OPEN signs on the outside of the box. You just do not expect anyone to do something like what happened here.

To make an analogy, it's like me buying, say a smartphone, and they opening the box right up, removing all the seals and stuff, juts to get me a pic of it.

This paper is currently sitting at their warehouse. I'm debating whether I should send it or not. That's why I opened this thread. To see if it can be used to anything worthwhile. If not, I'll them them to eat it.

It'll be fine for lumen prints, but only as good as whatever kind paper it is...some papers are better than others. Some suck.

Post this same query in the Alternative Processes sub-forum. I'd bet you will get some responses from those who can make use of fixed out paper.

If it was in a factory supplied box, there are warnings, though not in big print. But you are at a severe disadvantage to try and push the point.
As stated, it's usable for lumen prints, or "painting" with photo chemistry. Assuming they didn't handle it much, some of the paper inside the two stakes is probably usable for regular printing, though the edges will be severely fogged. And since the stack was split, it will be very hit or miss on locating "good" sheets.

I would try to press the case a bit more with the shipper, if you need an image of a factory label showing the warning, someone here can probably post one up.
I would be very bummed out at something like this, best of luck for making the best you can of it.

Then you had every reason to expect them to do the same this time. Stick to your guns; insist they cover your loss and be persistent. Tell them you didn't realize you were dealing with imbeciles or you would never have checked that photo option. If it was a gallon of milk would they have poured it in the sink to photograph it? Talk to the supervisor, and then his/her supervisor and keep going up the line. Don't stop until they agree to cover at least half of it.

I can't possibly press them more since I sent some 12 walls of text to them already. The case is lost. But I'm not paying squat for their "services" on this package.

And it is a lesson learned for sure. I'll still need their services from time to time, it's a necessary evil... but I'll be much more careful.
