Good to see young guy using film and a very useful tool. Just tried it and it worked great!

I just set up my iPhone to do this today - it's not going to replace contact sheets (generally washed out and poor blacks) but this is a very smart idea to quickly peruse negs.

Easy to do and works great in a pinch.

Just saw this today as well. I agree the quality isn't good enough to replace contact sheets, but it's great to get a sense of what you've got with a freshly developed roll of film.

Nice idea.

Something that I've been doing is using my iPad as a lightbox -- I have the flashlight app which makes the screen white (and it will stay on indefinitely) and with my loupe and negative sheets it works great.

I used to do it with my shitty flip phone when i was in high school. I still do it with my equally as shitty slider phone...

You can do the lightbox thing with a digital P&S or DSLR - just take a pic of a white sheet of paper. Voila - instant lightbox! And when you run the batteries down, well hey, you still have a real camera to take photos with!

Ive also been doing this for awhile now too, but I use a free sbsettings toggle from cydia to enable inverted colors. It is much easier to do this if your negs are sleeved and on a light box than hanging free. You can also rest your phone camera on a loupe for a magnified view.

Sometimes when I do want a quick look while drying, i max out the brightness of the screen (another sbsettings toggle), and open up the web browser and a new blank tab. This gives me a bright white screen to put behind the negs that are hung up to view them quickly.

This is a fairly common and neat function of modern smartphones.
I use my Samsung Galaxy SII with light to snatch a quick examination of trannies. It is very, very bright. Works a treat using face/flashlight option of app (if that isn't enough, I also have flashing red and blue lights and a police siren on the Galaxy for when I'm really late to the lab!).

Well, I'll be a monkeys uncle. I've been trying to figure out how to invert the video feed on the iPhone for weeks.
Guess I should have just asked the nearest 20 year old.

Jolly good show.

Smartphones/tablets also work great as makeshift light tables. I use the "flashlight" type app that lights up the screen to view negs on.

The possibilities are endless. How about a BW paper flasher or maybe you can snap a pic of your neg and you can figure out paper exposure time with burning and dodging previews?

That's a really cool idea. People have been able to write light-meter apps for phones, so I'm sure it's within the realm of possibility, so long as you could figure out the calibration.

Heaven forbid anyone would actually use their imagination anymore. Because we all know an IPhone is better than an imagination.

Yeah, why even take pictures anymore? We can just imagine what will come out of the camera. :whistling:
