Hi,

I would like to buy universal negative carrier #L3231-20 for LPL/OMEGA 6700/7700:

But in description is this:
Maximum openning of approximately 54mm x 65mm is designed to accept all negative formats up to 6x7cm (6x6cm with 6600 condenser enlarger).

I dont fully understand how I can use this negative carrier for 6x7 negatives with small openinng (right side on photo).
Does anyone have experience with this?
Thanks
Jan

The carrier has movable internal masks that are controlled by the yellow knobs. You can see the knobs are pulled in from the Edge to show the mask.

Thank you for your reply. I understand the function, but maximum openning of 54mm x 65mm is too small for 6x7 negatives (56mmx67mm). It is not enough for 6x6 too.

I'm using this one. It does crop rollfilm negatives, annoyingly. I'm printing 6x6, one dimension is slightly cropped. I guess it has always been standard procedure not to print all the way to the edge. Perhaps to get a clean border.

The glassless Durst negative masks for 135 and 6x6 negatives do pretty much the same. I'm using them for camera scanning my negatives. For colour negatives this is quite important, at least in my hands.

Still, I wish the blades on the universal carrier would open up all the way.

I have the universal carrier and use it with glass, plain at the bottom and AN on top. I'll measure tonight what the max opening is.The short side must slightly wider than 56mm as I can see part of the black strips with the film text on the base board.

Edit: seeing Lantau's post. I think I opened mine and did somthing to make the sliders move further.

The 6x7 glassless negative carrier for this series of LPL enlargers measures 54.97 mm x 68.02 mm. Part of the problem is that there are, to my knowledge, no standards for 6x4.5, 6x6, 6x7, and 6x9 negative formats. The sizes are approximations of the actual dimensions.

Each camera manufacturer decides what actual dimensions to use. The width, of 120 film is commonly 61mm but can be a little less; a few mm margins on each side doesn't get a negative width across the film much more than 55 to 56 mm. You could, if you wanted to, remove the masking blades and have them machined down to give the maximum opening the glass will allow. Personally, I don't think it is worth it. I don't know if even the camera manufacturers match the viewfinder image coverage to exactly match the negative coverage.

The opening in the bottom part of my carrier measures 54.9 x 81.9 mm. This is the maximum opening when the sliders would be gone. But since the film sits a few mm above this mask, the enlarger lens sees a larger area. My 645 negatives are 56.1 mm high and that full height plus a little extra is projected on the baseboard. I did hack the carrier a bit to get the vertical masking sliders completely out of the way to get the maximum vertical opening. I think it was just a matter of removing some kind of stop, not difficult. The vertical sliders can still be closed for a 35 mm negative. The unmodified horizontal sliders open to a maximum width of 66.6 mm. Maybe that's enough for the enlarger lens to see the 69 mm width of a 6x7 negative. Otherwise you'll need to modify the horizontal sliders as well.
