Uniroller base rotation

I'm thinking about modifying my uniroller base so that it only spins in one direction. Would I experience any ill effects of doing so? I use it to process 4x5 and 8x10 film, and it sometimes sticks slightly when it changes direction. Probably a dumb question, but what exactly is the purpose of the multiple directions?

I have one that the paddle that switches directions is broke and it only runs in one direction. I've not had any issues with it using 120 Tri-X or HP5 in 4x5 using HC110 or 510 pyro.

I have two of these bases and one works correctly the other doesn't, but I use which ever one I grab off the shelf, no difference in development.

I have a one-direction Beseler and an alternate direction Uniroller. With the former I would switch the tube around during processing to avoid any developer lag/streaking (especially for ulf film); but with the latter I leave it on for entire duration. It may depend on the developer and at what dilution, eg Rodinal at 1:50, as to how important to have the alt direction. Or I might just be overly cautious ;-)

I've got a Beseler that doesn't work at all. Any ideas on how to fix it?

The reason I'm asking is that when spinning, it is fairly smooth, but sometimes it lags/sticks when switching direction.

The device that makes it change rotational direction is mechanical and pretty simple. Mine was shorting out when it changed direction. I disconnected the arm that throws the switch and haven't had a problem since. Take the bottom off and have a look.

Most of the problems with small motors seem to be the connections. Again, take off the bottom and have a look. You may just have a bad wire.
