This is definitely what I’m going to try and do, I’ll post an update when i get home to do it.By very carefully masking and feathering an adjustment layer, you should be able to salvage the image. Unlink the mask from the adjustment layer so you can make small moves until the image looks natural. It might not be perfect for large scale printing, but 8x10 or web use should be OK.
