UNDER THE INFLUENCE: ANSEL ADAMS AND HIS LEGACY

“A great photograph is one that fully expresses what
one feels, in the deepest sense, about what is being
photographed.”-- Ansel Adams

Avenue 9 Gallery, Chico, California, invites you to
submit photographs for the juried group exhibition,
“Under The Influence: Ansel Adams and His Legacy.” The
exhibit will explore the many ways in which Adams has
influenced generations of photographers. “Under the
influence” runs October 17th – November 22nd in
conjunction with California State University Chico’s
celebration of Adams’ art, featuring the exhibition
“Nature and Spirit: the Landscape Photographs of Ansel
Adams” from Alison Jaques’ (granddaughter) collection
and an exhibition of Ira Latour photographs at the
1078 Gallery. Guest speakers at the University on
four consecutive October Thursdays are Michael Adams
(Adams' son), Byron Wolfe, Linda Conner, and Tom
Patton. These events will be widely publicized and
coincide with “Artoberfest,” Chico’s month-long
celebration of the arts.

Beyond his groundbreaking approach to tonal control in
the negative and print, Adams expanded our established
ideas about landscape photography beyond the literal
into the sublime. Contemporary Photography continues
to be in dialog with his approaches to landscape
photography and the photographic medium in general.
All photo-related processes will be considered.

Tom Patton, Head of Photography, CSU Chico Department
of Art and Art History, will serve as juror for Avenue
9’s exhibition. Patton’s photography is included in
such collections as the San Francisco Museum of Modern
Art, Seattle Art Museum, and the Australia National
Gallery.
