I find stories such as this, fascinating. My wife's great-grandfather, was a photographer, with a studio in the centre of town. He would have started up probably around the start of the Taisho period. I was able to visit his studio, which was run by another photographer (saw great grand father's big studio 8x10), back in 1991. I've asked his grandson (my wife's uncle) about his work, but he's not sure if any exists...but might in the kura (storehouse on their property). Next time I'm visiting, I'll see if I can search for it. This is the same uncle who pretty much got me really interested in photography. Love of photography had trickled down to the uncle. Anyhow, I'm happy that some of Ukai Gyokusen's work has been recovered. It's an important link back to the Meiji period.

Yes, it really is amazing to see the pictures from this time. The closest thing we can get to being a fly on the wall in a historic world.
