Type of tool to get lens out of barrel - Help!

I've got a 240mm G Claron in barrel. I think (not sure) that I need to remove the front element from the barrel/aperture ring to get it into a Copal 1 shutter. It won't unscrew by hand. Can someone tell me what tool to use to do this and what the procedure is please?

Try using rubber gloves, micro tools used to sell a rubber sheet for just such an occasion. Put the lens between your hands as if you are clapping, squeeze together and twist.

On the other hand you could put the barrel in a vice and hit it with a hammer and chisel! Works most of the time on rusty nuts ;-)

Will,

the front part of the lens should unscrew from the aperture part of the barrel. That part screws into the front of the shutter and the back part unscrews from the back part of the aperture ring and that screws into the back part of the shutter. Then you are left with the section of the lens that contains the f/stops. Every lens I have seen just unscrews by hand. You might try to a piece of rubber to grip the lens better. Good luck.

I had a similar problem on my 240 G Claron, IIRC I used a rubber "strap wrench" you find in the bargain bins at the hardware store (2 different sizes for a $1.99 or something like that.) You'll need the small one.

Those rubber things to wrench the tops off jars work well too.

You could use the underside of a mouse pad. Worked for me recently.

Success!

I tried the rubber glove approach and it didn't budge. I had the distinct impression that the sight of the rubber glove caused it to seize up. Go figure. So I went to the store, spent $18 on a strap wrench, brought it home and discovered the strap part was too thick. I then severely admonished the lens that it was causing way too many difficulties for me and that its boorish, unamenable and refractory ways must cease forthwith or I would use the strap on it anyway. That did the trick and it promptly unscrewed when I tried with the glove again. Well, actually I unscrewed part of the barrel, but it got me close enough to get the front element out.

"Those rubber things to wrench the tops off jars work well too." This approach will work.

I had the same problem with my 210mm & 240mm g-clarons and used this kitchen rubber gripper to remove the cells. Take care not to mark the glass.
