I saw this on the original photo.net thread...very cool. I use that same lens for 8x10; it's a killer-sharp lens. No shutter on mine, but I'm not bothered by that.

So, how was it for shooting? "It works" is one thing...but was it manageable? Did you get the kind of images you thought you'd get?

If I see your killersetup I think be carefull otherwise they think you belong to Osama and his killers.
But if I see it I just know again why I like my Sinar modular system. I can get with my P and F1 and an adidional standartframe easy up tp 1,60m bellows extention and can focus my 610mm APO Nikkor a bit more the to 1:1 if I would like it!

No, Bob, frustration at not being able to get close enough to some subjects.

David G., it depends on the insects. The cameras, alas, are aged and long past sex. I've talked dirty to them, shown them camera pornography, and they just won't do anything. Nothing arouses them anymore.

Mongo, its fairly easy to use. Setting up takes a couple of minutes and some fiddling to get the lens to its infinity position. How does it shoot? Fair question, we'll know when the first films come back from the lab. I have high hopes, as usual, could be badly mistaken, also as usual.

Tom, I have a 600 Apo Ronar that weighs 8 pounds. Wanna trade? I've designed additional bracketry for mounting the Apo Ronar, am convinced that on my setup it it will cover nominal 6x6 at best. The nicest thing about the additional bracketry is that I can fabricate it myself. Had to farm out fabrication of the current set of brackets and especially the coupler that goes between the cameras.

Armin, I like your Sinar system too, just as I like Tom's Wehman. But given that I have the two Graphics and not much desire to go up in format, I think my approach to using longer lenses has some merit. Less capable, certainly, but also less expensive.

OK Dan, time to quit messing around and get "Big Bertha"!

Of course those were 1959 $$ when a new Ford was only about double that so 20 grand ought to do it. I don't think I can survive another day without 40 inch TTL focus on a rollfilm back!

And at the short end, here's a 1.75"/2.8 Elcan on a 2x3 Pacemaker Speed Graphic. The lens is focused to infinity. For those who speak only metric, that's 44 mm. Doesn't cover 2x3, though, clips the corners. Illuminates 90 mm.

Dan, I have a nice little Schneider Göttingen Aertotar 500mm f:6.6 that could use some bracketing - the only camera I have with a front strong enough to hold it doesn't have enough extension... Besides it's a tele design, flange focal distance about 40cm. But that old German Reisekamera only goes to 32cm. A 20cm tube? Large catfood tin (empty)?

Ole, what do you intend to use for a shutter?

I made the tandem rig instead of building a monorail incorporating my 2x3 Speed with (a) a moveable front standard or (b) a rack and pinion device for moving the Speed fore and aft for focusing. The monorail seemed much harder and more expensive to realize.

The potential problem I see with your Aerotar is that the rear node (or perhaps I should have said exit pupil) is ~ 10 cm in front of the back of the lens. You'll need to put the shutter as close to the back of the lens as possible to reduce the chances of vignetting. Reasoning from similar triangles, if the shutter is at the back of the lens, to cover the format you need a shutter whose diameter/10 cm >= 150/500, i.e., whose diameter wide open >= 3 cm. So a #1 will just do, and larger would be better.

How big is your Reisekamera's lens board? If its front standard will bear the load, you might make a tube out of PVC pipe. Stronger than a coffee can, easy to machine.

I just started thinking about building an extension with a Packard shutter in - since I happen to have one, I mean The lens board currently holds an Iris mount with 4½" opening, total diameter about 6". That's why I bought that camera, it was cheaper than the mount alone! And it's a classic rear focus "Reisecamera" - the front is rigid, there in no front standard at all!

I haven't checked if a catfood tin will fit in the iris yet. Hmmmm - lots of fun when I get home!

On the other hand I might put the iris mount on the Russian 30x40cm camera that's on the way - lensboard even bigger, construction if possible stronger, and none of my 5x7" lenses will cover. My best candidates are a Steinheil Patent #6, and a slightly newer Lancaster & Son "Patent Rectilinear" 12x10". I was a bit disappointed that the Aerotar was a tele lens, that reduces the chances of covering 500mm considerably
