I recently did some horsetrading, and now I have in my hot little hands a Canham 5x12 and three film holders, and a circa 1920 Gundlach Wizard 11x14 with three plate holders and a triple-convertible Rapid Rectilinear. The Canham and holders are new, and the 11x14 may as well be. It looks like someone bought it in 1920, shot a half-dozen glass plates with it, then put it away in a climate-controlled dust-free room, to pull it out only now. I'll get pics posted when I get the chance. I have some bold project ideas for both cameras in mind now, and I'm getting psyched to put some film/glass through them!

Thanks!

And the best part? I'm not on the hook for either for even a single dime... two judicious trades got me both of them! My old Hasselblad lenses and some accessories for the 5x12, and my old Xpan for the 11x14. After I got the 11x14, I was so stunned by the condition, I had to call up my trading partner and make sure I had given him enough for it....

If the 11x14 is set up for glass plates, does that mean that a sheet film holder would put the film at a distance from the focal plane?

I have found 2mm plastic sheet to be a good, and lighter, substitute for glass. On the plus side, some types of plastic hold them film well through static. On the negative, they can sometimes do the same for dust.

Congratulations. I am very jealous.

You have to be careful with static. It can exposure your film when the static discharges!

OK, now I'm wildly jealous. When you want to trade them on just let me know

Well, I now have film en route for the 5x12... I'll shoot it this weekend while I'm out at my folks' place. I've got to make a new GG for the 11x14- the original bought it in transit, and restore a couple of the plate holders. I'll try to coat a couple plates tonight after work, if I can make it to the hardware store on my way home.

That's the spirit! Good luck, Scott. I'll be starting my split grade adventures tonight. Can't wait to get home! Shawn
