Twitchy Mamiya 7 shutter?

I rented a Mamiya 7 II to see if I liked it. I do, especially the quality glass.

One thing I noticed though was that doing an AE lock by half-pressing the shutter was almost impossible. No matter how lightly I pressed, it went straight from light press to click.

Is this normal or was this one just extra sensitive?

When you first press, there will be little or no feel of resistance. When you do feel some resistance, that is when you are at the point where enough added pressure will release the shutter.


Do you ever see the display light up in the viewfinder? It only takes a very slight depression of the shutter release to light up the display. If you are not seeing it, it is possible you are pushing harder than you need to.

If you are not seeing the display, try moving your eye as close as possible as you look into the viewfinder while changing your viewpoint slightly higher and lower as you look through and lightly press the shutter release. The display will only be visible when your eye is at the right height in a rather narrow range up and down as you look in the viewfinder.

If you wear glasses, take them off to make it easier to get closer until you know where to look for the display.

I have two of the original 7 model and they do not behave like that. I assume you got a bum one for the rental.

I have a Mamiya 7 and two Mamiya 7II bodies. All three have a fairly sensitive shutter release and more than once I have released the shutter when what I wanted to do was lock in the exposure.

My Fuji GA645zi is very different in that when you press down on the shutter you quickly get a lock on exposure, and to release the shutter requires a decision to press down more. I much prefer the way it works to the Mamiya 7 and 7II.

But since negative quality from the Mamiya 7/7II is so outstanding I have learned to live with the shutter release.
