I’ve had heaps of helpful advice in this thread, but so far I haven’t taken the plunge. In part that’s because I’m off my feet for a few months, but I do intend the tripod for hiking trips once I’m active again. Perversely, the tripods that seem best suited for foot travel tend to be skimpy on height (I am 1.87m) and/or much more expensive than I can justify for the amount of use it will get.

And by the way, although I need a tripod specifically to hold my Leica still, I don’t need it to match the Leica brand image! I’ll be very happy with a functional tripod that no one has ever heard of.

Right now try and concentrate on getting bipedal again! You can practice hand holding at 1/2 second

Hope you're back to 100% soon.

My recommendation would be a Gitzo series 0 or series 1 tripod. They are the smallest, lightest Gitzos. You can attach a 3-way pan and tilt or ball head. I hiked a series 3 for years, only recently switched to a carbon fiber series 2 mountaineer. I must admit that having used Leica M's for years I never used them on a large tripod, only Leica's table top, with large ball head. Outstanding. 99% of my Leica shooting is handheld.
