Tripod Question

I need a sturdier tripod for my Canham 5x7. My Gitzo G1226 is a bit top heavy with the 5x7. It does fine with MF and /or 35mm.

What do you use?

I have a wood Canham 5x7. Gitzo GT4553S with an Arca Swiss d4 head. Expensive, but very happy with the combination

Vanguard Actus plus 283CT with Induro PHT2 pan head works for both my 5x7 Dorffclone and Nagaoka 8x10 field cameras, legs rated for 14kg and head rated for 13kg. I also have Induro AT313 leg set rated for 15kg with Benro HD3A head rated for 12kg.

I have an older Gitzo G340. It is rock solid with my Sinar Norma 4x5 and Sinar Norma 5x7. Its also pretty good with the Sinar Norma 8x10, but that camera might be happier with a 4 series Gitzo.

Also, I use only the Sinar head becuase it is much lower profile than most 3-way heads. I also have a Gitzo 15xx offset ball head, but I really dont like ball heads, even one as big as that.

Here's my Dorffclone on my old Berlebach Report tripod using the PHT-2 head. Great tripod but not as convenient to use as the Induro or Vanguard.

I've tested the lighter Ries J series with the wooden Canham 5x7. An ideal marriage in my opinion.

I used the Ries backpacker version for a few years with both the Canham and Deardorff 5x7. I was never that fond of the screw together legs. When i got an 8x10, I sold the backpacker, found a Ries from the Hollywood era, put my Ries head on it and pocketed the change.

I used Bogen/Manfrotto (various models and heads), and also Gitzo tripods, but have since switched to all CF. My favorite is the Induro CT-303, which has 3-section legs, and has a stated capacity of 55lbs. It comes with two columns, and a spike foot kit, which take only minutes to change.

I use it with my 4x5 cameras (Cambo, Linhof Technika, Meridian, etc.), Mamiya Super, and all my DSLR's. I use various 3-way heads (Bogen/Manfrotto). With a Manfrotto head, it weighs in at around 6 lbs.

In the oldies but goodies arena (metal non-CF), an old Gitzo Reporter or Studex series pod will work well.

Ries is sweet, a little on the long side, but great support.

I found the Reporter series a bit too wobbly for the 5X7 Canham I tested (but didn't purchase). The slightly heavier old Studex makes more sense. And of course, the same CF that works for my lightweight 8x10 would be great for 5x7 too. I happen to like the length of the Ries, even though I'm not a tall guy, and just bunji cord it vertically to back of my external frame pack. Since I don't use any kind of intervening head with view cameras, having a little extra leg length is a luxury.

I use the Berlebach with the Gitzo three way head. Works great up to 8x10.
