Tripod head identification question

I previously asked this, but it was buried in another post.

At the risk of repeating myself myself,

does anyone recognize this tripod head/platform?

It arrived yesterday and I am working on making it fit a headless tripod.

Murray, it looks a lot like it would be an old Sanford & Davis.

Take a look at "MAJESTIC 802 ADAPTER" to help you mount it.

& of it doesn't take the majestic adapter, You could make one with a piece of hardwood dowel & a 3/8-16 or 1/4-20 threaded bushing. Or aluminum/brass/steel rod tapped with the correct thread.

Yeah, that's a Davis and Sanford head. Tell us how you like it. I've thought about getting one myself. You can buy them new at B&H.

It attaches via a post mount. There are two standard sizes of post mount and Majestic makes adapters for both of them to 3/8"-16 tripod screws. B&H and Adorama should both sell the adapters, or you may be able to order directly from Majestic. Google, and you should turn up their website.

I have a new surveyors tripod with 7/16-16? bolt & no head. That's what I was thinking....the store where I got it (going out of business sale) thought my question of how much weight could it handle was stupid - "it holds a transit" was the only answer they thought made sense.

Still twisting & poking to figure out what does what on it. The handle only seems to pan, the side knurled knobs loosen to allow manual tilt, seems imprecise.

The knobs below cause some kind of tilt (fine adjust for the manual tabel tilt?), but with the whole thing in one's hands, it's hard to get a reference for what is moving in which direction. Gotta mount it first.

Yeah - B&H has a photo "V2 vernier head", 40# capacity. That gives me a good feeling of confidence.

You can cut that 7/16" bolt off, drill & tap a hole for either 1/4 or 3/8" run a bolt through the bottom & then fasten the head to that. Or---get the majestic adapter & have it tapped for 7/16".

My surveyors 'pod has a screw that looks like a screwdriver with a 7/16" bolt out the top. It looks like a headache to remove, but I haven't thought too hard about it yet.

I have access to a machinist who will make me an adapter, so that looks like the easiest path (famous last words) Thanks for the suggestion.

If anyone thinks the surveying pod is a dumb way to go, please advise and I'll keep looking for something more appropriate.

It's 5/8-11 thread. The defunct hardware store that sold me the 7/16 tap...oh well, now I have a misplaced orphan tap somewhere.

I have an adapter now, courtesy of a helpful metal artisan.

Now I realize the surveying type of tripod I have (David White), has nothing to limit how far the legs spread, except triangle spike feet stuck in dirt.

I'll have to figure out some kind of chain retainer or similar like some display easels have, perhaps.
