Trimming ground glass/fresnel

I just got a groundglass/fresnel set to put in my old Century Master studio camera. The fresnel and glass are about 4mm too long and 2mm too wide to fit. How should I go about trimming them? Is this something the glass cutter at a frame shop could do, or do I need to take it somewhere that specializes in glass work? Or does this need to be filed down with a grinder of some kind? Of course, the fresnel is plastic.

You might ask the person at the frame shop, but you might be better off taking it to a specialty shop.

When I have cut glass for frames and have ended up with a corner flaring out a little, I have used my grinder to remove the flare. Sounds a little chancey to do it along the whole side of a GG (maybe not if it is just a little small 4x5).

Just wear eye protection, a dust mask and thick gloves!

Generally speaking, the smallest cut (width) you can take off a piece of glass is the thickness, and that is tricky to do.

The 4mm I'd try cutting, the 2mm I'd grind, assuming that its typical 1/16" glass. There are special glass grinders, they use a diamond impregnated wheel, and water for cooling and dust control.

Try a stained glass shop, they could probably grind it for you for a reasonable cost. Framing guys generally deal in easy straight cuts, but the stained glass people deal in small intraicte shapes, so would be a better bet.

Scott,

You will have to use a wet sander, or grinder. Contact a glass shop to help you out. Glass this thin is really hard to cut and get out of it a usable GG.

I have one that is about a mm to large to fit in the 1220, I've not done it yet, but I haven't broken my current one. lol
