tri x master roll ...

hi

for all those people who shoot odd formats and not so odd formats
if there was a way to purchase a master roll of tri x film
and have a 3rd party cut and box the film for film holders ( or whatever )
would anyone be interested in it ?
i know a special film order from big yellow has to be a gigantic quantity,
but i have a feeling it all has to be the same format ( like all 11x14 &C )
if a master roll could be had and whatever sizes needed ( 2x3 to gigantic ) could
be cut & boxed, so the amount and all formats could be taken care of ...

this isn't a reality but who knows maybe it could be, if there was enough interest in it ...

I'd be interested in TXP in odd sizes, if someplace like Photo Warehouse could cut it.

I'd be interested... dependent upon price etc. but it would be nice to know the price of the master roll and the price of cutting.
Perhaps photowarehouse could be the 3rd party to cut it.

Any master roll will have a tiny amount of defects. Kodak inspection and software map these out in preparation for the cutting and boxing operations so that you dont get a defective slice of that master roll. If you are going to get someone to do this, you need to take that into account and Kodak may not permit it for quality assurance purposes.

So, at least make sure that the 3rd party knows how to handle 7 mil acetate or estar and knows how to handle a defect spec in their software.

John, if there is enough interest to purchase a master, then having Kodak convert it (slit, package, etc), is the only way to go. Whoever does it, is somehow gonna have to be responsible for ancillary processes, such as edge printing and notch coding, etc.

I've had experience with slitters handling photo PAPER, which I'm sure is much less susceptable to damage than film. There are a variety of things which can occur, often related to pressure fogging or desensitization, or even off-spec cutting. The big issue is, "who is responsible and who pays?"

Anyone who's ever had software or hardware issues on their computer knows how this game goes. The hardware people check things, then say "the hardware is fine, it must be your software." The software people tell you that the software is working properly, it must be the new hardware. So, if you're caught in the middle, what do you do? Unless there's a reason for you to take a chance, it's probably best to leave the entire job in one set of hands.

I have a hard time believing that if you buy an entire master roll of Tri-X that Kodak won't render it for you in any way that you want. Any array of formats that the film will accommodate (clearly 7 mil Estar base isn't going to work for roll film for example) should be on the negotiating table. You're talking a major buy here; I'm sure they'd be willing to discuss it.

The better questions might be -- where are you going to store it and under what conditions, and how will you distribute and sell it? If I understand correctly, you're talking about enough Tri-X to supply the entire world for months. There's a lot of film in a master roll.

You might want to think instead of making a major buy in a standard size (like 16 x 20) that you can then recut into smaller sizes of your own choosing. That might be a much more affordable way to get what you want. Or not. Your money, your choice.

One master roll is about 35,000 rolls of 35mm film or the equivalent in sheet film. It weighs several tons and must be stored frozen or well refrigerated.

That would be nice as long as it doesn't end up in 10 sheet boxes. Can anyone imagine what 120, 4x5, 5x7 or 8x10 in Panatomic-X would be like today?

I'd be interested too, but only a few hundred sheets of 4x5" at best. That's a heck of a lot of film to find a home for.

I'd buy at least a couple of 50 sheet boxes of 320TXP in 6.5x8.5 and 7x11! Was just thinking about this earlier today actually!

There's no way you're going to generate enough demand on APUG to purchase an entire master roll. Come back down to earth. Even if you had everyone interested in a 100 sheets of 4x5, you'd need a ~1400 people lining up.

I have a feeling you're going to be continually waiting for a reply from Kodak because you won't be getting one.

If, if, if ... if I were to get into LF, and I have not plans to at this time, I would order 1,000 sheets of 4x5 Tri-X because I know I would never see it again. But I am not thinking about it, so please do not count me.

while it was a great idea, in theory, and the third party would have been happy to
cut and package &C the film ... unfortunately, big yellow doesn't/won't sell master rolls ...

i guess it is back to paper negatives for me ...

Wake up, Panatomic-X is available on thin PET base. Not in 10sheet boxes, but 250feet of 9.5" wide.
