Once thing I noted in 2019 was that flying back to the US from Montreal, they were willing to hand check my film, but not a camera. They insisted on x-raying the camera. In the US going out anywhere they will hand check both.
If you're coming to Montreal and want to buy film, I suggest Photo Service in old Montreal.
Downtown Camera in Toronto. Film sales and kind of OK developing.
Cancelations and delays are part of the welcome package.
Not sure how many places left here which are willing to deal with slide film.
If you are for seven weeks here, driving is better option. At least, rent at location. Public transit is not developed in Canada.
Beau Photo in Vancouver.
Amplis Photo - the Ilford distributor - if you can have film shipped to an address.
Given the prices and the competition from the US internet retailers, not a lot of Canadian retailers stock a lot of film.
With respect to flights, our flight YOW - YYZ was delayed by 1 hour. Security in Ottawa was smooth as usual. The next flight YYZ - AMS is also delayed by 1 hour for now. The board at YYZ shows a lot of delayed flights. However, these things happened pre-pandemic as well. It may be a different story when the English language schools go on summer vacation by the end of next week. YYZ currently has a personnel shortage like other airports. It's best to keep sufficient time (2h) between flights at the big airports if possible.
FWIW, Montreal Trudeau airport (YUL) did NOT have CT scanners in October 2021.
Cancelations and delays are part of the welcome package. - You mean that this is the CURRENT situation at major airports in Canada (YVR, YYZ, etc)? In all my travels to and from Canada over the past 23 years I've never had a delay and only one cancellation (that got dealt with promptly by putting me on the next available flight). I'm not interested in pre-pandemic information since I have plenty of that myself, I want to know about more recent experiences people have had (or that they know of from others), ideally from this year.
If you are for seven weeks here, driving is better option. At least, rent at location. Public transit is not developed in Canada. I lived in 4 different provinces for 26 years without a car and am pretty aware of the public transportation options. I got along just fine. That said, other than my 10 days in the Yukon and NWT (where I will be renting a car for part of the time), and possibly for a day or two when I am in Ottawa (for day trips out of the city) most of my time will be spent at home with my parents where I will have free access to a vehicle, so no issues there.
Living in Canada without car? No problem to hear it, we are just on different continents of living style.
Kiss you goodbye.
Thanks Matt. I'm aware that getting film from the US would probably be cheaper (and have more options) but I'm trying to prepare for situations such as running out of film while I am travelling and/or stocking up as I go
Thanks - that's really helpful! I'll be arriving in YYZ from Greenland (!) and then flying to Winnipeg from there. However, because I'm not sure what flight delays may be like I've decided to book a flight out of Toronto a day later, just for some peace of mind. It's not a connecting flight as such, so ideally, as long as I get through check-in and security early enough I should be okay.
Are hand-checks still done (either YOW or YYZ)? Even if it's just regular x-ray and not CT, I'd like to get my film hand-checked just to be on the safe side, if it's possible and if there's enough time to get it done.
