I will be heading away on a trip to the other side of the USA via air and I was wondering...IF I cannot get the airport to agree to hand check my packs of Fuji FP-100C and they do go through the carry on scanner, will they be harmed? I have had a poor experience a couple of times in the past trying to even get packed film hand checked, and want to assume that these will have to go through the carry-on X-ray. I know that packing them in my suit case would be far worse! Thanks and happy summer to all!
I've run FP-100c through the carry-on scanners many times, with no problems (that I've noticed). Usually it's just once per trip: I travel somewhere, shoot the pictures, then take the pictures home (the ones I haven't given away). The X-ray exposures are cumulative, so you wouldn't want your unexposed film to pass through more than two or three times.
As with all films, it is generally safer to just let it pass through the carry-on baggage scanner. Once it gets into the hands of a TSA agent, anything can and will happen. They all seem to want to "open the box" and look inside - even after you tell them five times that it is FILM and cannot be exposed to light.
Just put the film in a separate bag from the camera, so that if they decide to put the camera bag through a second time from another angle, the film doesn't get a second dose.
An update: I traveled with the FP-100C without any problems. It was in a carry on bag along with the camera, and the couple of shots that went through the X-ray again on the way home that I had not shot made it through just fine. Thanks for the advice!
