Traditional Photography

Why not re-invent B&W Photography Magazine (UK).

I'm suggesting that the publishers of B&W Magazine should make Outdoor Photography their flagship Digital Photography Magazine and revamp B&W magazine renamed as Traditional Photography, a magazine dedicated to traditional film, & alternative, darkroom techniques.

Since Ailsa left as editor B&W has become stale and floundered, it's the publishers that don't know which way to turn, not the Editor.

Do we really need a B&W only magazine, I personally don't think it's viable or healthy.

Lets lobby GMC Publications, rather than constantly complaining about B&W magazine. One things for sure there are analog advertisers using the magazine as their sole printed outlet.

I would very much like to see them put something out along the lnes of a technical journal. That's the direction it looks like CiM is going to take but I would love to be able to read someone else's like minded material every now and again. I second the motion.

The thing is, I think print magazines are basically over and dead. It'd cost a lot to establish another print magazine. Magnachrom was headed in the right direction I think, it was really too bad to learn of the Editor's health problems. Sorry Chris, I haven't checked out CiM yet, will do though...

Nowadays, a person can use In Design to put together a snazzy web-based magazine, and people can print off whatever they wish or pay to have high-quality prints sent from a third party printer.

Content is something that there is *plenty* of: it could be mined directly from APUG. E.g. an issue could contain an annotated informative thread from the annals of APUG, include a portfolio, a few columns or blog articles... and voila, you have as much real content as you find in any current photography magazine.

I'd also prefer a magazine open to any and all analogue workflows... not just b&w.

I think that's a great idea Ian.
I got the library I work in to get a subscription to Black and White magazine when Photo Techniques went so much digital. Over thge last few issues of Black and White, the content has become more and more biased toward digital. The tertiary institution I work at has a traditional photography course and the magazine used to be perfect for the students. No more, alas.
Your suggestion should be taken up by the publisher as there really is nothing else out there like that.

I am guessing that the response would be roughly as follows: we get far more digital content than traditional, thus the magazine places more digital images. If you want more traditional work displayed, then submit more for consideration.

I agree. It might be possible to publish a magazine with a clear focus and aimed at a well-defined and researched audience. It would take charisma, quality, and marketing genius. One possibility would be an APUG magazine. The audience is already there. One could combine APUG subscription with a print magazine subscription in ways similar to Photoshop User Magazine and NAPP.
