Ok, basically...I loaded my camera up with some 135 tech pan, shot about 5 images, and precded to fool around with it...I accidentally rewound the entire roll.

I don't suppose that anyone who is going to soup some TP could help me? Specifcally, I was wondering if someone could pull out those 5 images, cut them off, develop it, while still letting me use as much of the rest of the roll as I can? I'll cover the cost of postage, chemicals, and your time. Please, I really do not want to waste a roll of Tech Pan.

Thank you...

Why don't you put it back in your camera and just advance 7 frames (gives you some room for any difference in loading) and finish it off your self? If you rewound the leader, probably any camera store or processing place could retrieve the leader for you.

You save the postage of doing it separately.

Just a thought.

Hi

maybe I'm missing something here but can't you just fish out the start of the roll and run the film through the camera again...with the lens cap on for the first 6 shots or so ?

I do this all the time, when I want to change film speeds part way thro a roll .
I just remember how much Iv'e used and reload and wind on till I hit the unexposed frame.

hope this helps.

Kodak leader extractor tool

You may want to buy one of those Kodak leader extractor tools that is designed to get the beginning of the leader out of the canister. They used to cost around $12 and you will probably find it useful more than once!

Practice on an old roll before trying on your tech pan. Once you learn how, just put the roll back in your camera, wind on to frame 8 or so (for safety) and keep shooting. While advancing from 0 to 8, just make sure you shoot on manual (1/500 at f16) with the lens covered so you don't double expose.

Thanks guys. I forgot completely about the leader extractors...I should have tried to buy one at B&H (I was there, fondling MF cameras).

The simple solution is always so obvious, and sometimes it just flies right over my head.

Edit: This? Dead Link Removed

Alternatively, you can stop by any 1-hour place that develops film (e.g., a pharmacy) and ask them to retrieve the film leader for you.

I can not warn you enough! Fondling MF cameras can be very costly to your pocketbook. You are liable to end up needing a wallet extractor if you are not extremely careful.

That's the ticket, though any of the ones on this page will do. Pick one: Dead Link Removed I use the super deluxe, Adorama Branded, $10 model from Kalt. It's something one should carry in the bag anyway for just such emergencies. I actually have two, one for the darkroom and one for the gadget bag.

I ended up getting the generic one from BH. I honestly like BH more than Adorama, same price, so...why not support the store I like more?

Also, the MF bug is biting. I can't get the Mamiya 7 or Mamiya RZ67 out of my head. Surprisingly, I did not like the Hasselblad at all. It just seemed average to me.

I use a 0.5"x5" piece of 4x5 film with a piece of double stick tape on the end to retrieve 35mm film leaders.

Of course, it gets expensive if you have to buy a 4x5 camera in order to have 4x5 handy...

I remember some film disaster when I was visiting Israel in 1983. Of course, no changing bag. Afterwards I bought one of those leader extractors, Delta or Kalt? Of course, because it's now in my bag, I've never needed it.

That's why I put a toolbox in the car for long trips.........

I have a much cheaper trick. I used to do this as a film developer in a B&W lab. Take a piece of 35mm film, dip it in a little water...not too much. The h2o will basically drip off anyway. Stick about 2 inches in and WIND THE FILM BACKWARDS like you were rewinding it inside a camera. When the film "catches" the film you stuck in, it'll pull it inside the canister. This means, the 2 pieces of plastic is "sticking" (basic 5th grade science, water/celophane and voila! stuck). Then pull the piece of 35mm out and....the leader inside will come with it. (somtimes I just stick the film in my mouth to moisten it instead of dipping in h2o....maybe I have silver poisining now.... )

This is why I love medium format, I have 1 A-24 back and 6 A-12 backs now. So many flavors of film, yum.

I'll have to try this now that I bought an F100 that doesn't have a leader out option. :-(

Prof Davidhazy from the RIT (that guy with those weird projects...) has published an idea of a selfmade retriever.

http://people.rit.edu/andpph/text-retriever.html

Nice one and thanks. It's certainly worth making and trying on a wet afternoon. Of course if you are away from home then you still have to remember to put it into your camera kit.

Is there a device for retrieving and restoring an old brain. Mine just stays in its cassette some days and refuses to come out:D
