Hello all:

i need some guidance.

i purchased a Minolta X700 off EBay; "for parts or not working condition" for $5 solely to disassemble and to learn. Thought I would examine the innards, particularly towards being able to do the electrolytic capacitor replacement fix which is symptomatic of these models.

Removed the top and bottom in an orderly and repeatable manner; hopefully so I can reassemble!

Here's my question . . . When reassembling the various "slotted retainers" removed using my spanner wrench, such as the ones securing the shutter release, film advance lever, etc, how "tight" should they be fastened? What's the torque specification, even though you can't use a torque wrench on them.

I imagine they can't be so loose as to potentially back out, but not so tight as to cause binding of the parts or limit functioning properly.

So what's the method followed by you experienced repair folks? Thanks for the help.

DO NOT put any sort of threadlocker on the threads unless you want to risk twisting the heads off. It is safe to put a dap of nail lacquer or enamel paint on the head. The screws in a camera are small, I use judgement and a lot of experience when tightening them, my tourque wrenches aren't suitable for anything smaller than sat an 8-32 screw, huge by camera standards. It's very very important that your screwdrivers fit the screws properly.

To reinforce that screw in screw or ring tight then apply translucent nail lacquer to external parts and garish red to internals, you need to use lacquer remover before dismantle.

Simpler to check the external fasteners regular, some will have fixative in thread which will be a challenge, Nikon worst offenders.
