Hi All, I have a BW film (reversal) that I either overdid the 1st developer or screwed it during re-exposure. Anyway, I can see the image there but they are very faint. So I wonder if I could do some toning to darken the film. If so, would anyone have an idea how to do it? Many thanks!

You can use Ilford IT-8 toner.

This uses a Dichromate bleach, same as ain ntensifier, then a Pyrocatchin staining developer so adds quite a lot of intensification.

Hi Ian,

the dichrom bleach is only the k dichromate alone right? no sulfuric acid like the reversal bleach. Also, does the pyrocatechin intensify the film more than selenium? many thanks!

No the Dichromate bleach must contain Hydrochloric acid to re-halogenate the silver, I'd use the proportions for a strong Chromium Intensifier, this give very significant intensification. (You could still use Selenium as well)

Bleach

Ptassium Dichromate 10% solution - 100ml
Hydrochloric acid (conc) 2.4ml
Water to make 1 litre

The redevelop in

Re-developer from IT-8 Toner

Pyrocatechin 1.75g
Sodium Carbonate 15g
Water to 1 litre

Both solutions should be mixed just before use, particularly the re-developer which only keeps for a short time (15-20 mins). You get the intensification of the chromium intensifier plus the staining from the re-developer. The bleach bath is to completion, followed by a thorough wash which should be done in daylight (preferably) as this gives the re-exposure.

Re-development is to completion, about 3-4 minutes. I have used this combination to intensify negatives and it gives quite significant increase in density.
