to stamp or not?

I was thinking about ordering a stamp for the backs of my photos, ala "stamped on verso" any ideas on this? Do they even have archival stamp ink? Basically, how should I go about getting this done.

Will,

I have used a rubber stamp in the past but have switched to using Archival Labels (Avery 6572 - 2 x 2.625 10up) printed on an epson 2200.

This allows me to customize each label.

I also use the labels. I think the stamp might look more traditional, but the labels are just easier.

I also use computer-printed press-apply labels - permanent ones that can't be easily removed. I include a copyright notice along with contact info and the negative index reference for the specific image, so I can easily deal with reprint requests or questions.

Is there a way to determine if a computer-printed press-on label is "permanent" or not? Are they special types of labels?

Most of the time the package will either say permanent or removable. As to how permanent permanent means I cant really say. Obviously, a label can easily be defaced. I think all that permanent means is that the label can only be removed in pieces kind of like the labels on the wine bottles I use to put chems in.

Though a stamp also is not foolproof, a sticky label could always be put over it.

Anyway, I do like the look of the stamp. What information do most people usually have on the stamp?

Here's what my labels look like.

They are Avery Laser/Ink Jet White Permanent I.D. Labels #6572 2x2-5/8
and the package says "Archival safe and acid free"

i'd be careful of any adhesive gluing the acid free paper to the back of the print, unless it is reversible ( like wheat or rice paste ) .

if i have to label anything, i just use a pencil ...

I use the Avery labels as well. Was also considering doing a thumb print beside the label and initialling that with a pencil. But that might be a bit to affectasious (sp for sure)

We might have gone over this before but I'm not sure. What does having a *copyright* symbol actually do? If you have the copyright symbol on the adhesive, and someone peels the sticker off...then what?

Does anyone have links for copyright FAQ's? Maybe I'll just google but I want something that pertains to photo images...either web or print.

I use a rubber stamp....I tap the stamp lightly on a piece of paper first to remove some of the ink before I press it on the back of the print....

True, but I put them on the back of the mount, not the print.

I would not use a Sharpie. You can buy archival pens like a sharpie at any good art supply store.

I done a large print exchange with a photographer in Japan. We did not mount out prints but he wanted them signed so I purchased a fine tipped archival marker and it worked great.

What about the acid in the glue? I use a natural ink. No acid.

I have always used the 3/4 by 1 1/2 clear archivial avery lables and printed on my ink jet, I have prints that have been out there for quite a long time with no problems at all and once they are applied, they would almost have to destroy the print to get them off, anybody that has purchased glass from me has seen them on the tissue wrapping that we pack our glass in, nice, small and non-intrusive, you can get about 800 of them for $4.00 at Walmart.

Anyway, the gelatin itself is held to the paper by something -- all glue cant be bad.

While I think I like the look of the stamp better, it doesn't seem like it would work for RC paper. Is there a special type of ink?
