During 2022 I made the decision to pick one film and one developer and stick with it. The Tri-X developed in Rodinal has been a learning experience but has been both educational and producing images I like. During the transition, I either used or gave away any film that wasn't Tri-X. Most of my film has come from either Adrian Bacon or Midwest Photo Supply but I did have a handful from a local shop, Pro Photo Supply. After developing and scanning, I was cutting the negatives in my 1980's era Spiratone Negative Cutter. When I was starting to file the negatives, I looked at the edge markings expecting to see Kodak 400TX but to my surprise it was Kodak 400 2TMY which is TMax. Of course both the boxes and the cassettes are long gone and there is the strong possibility a roll of TMax snuck in somewhere but I was pretty sure all of the boxes were marked for Tri-X. This roll was in a ziplock bag of loose boxes of film, everything else in the refrigerator is ten roll bricks. Not the greatest images but here they are:

Interesting story. Can I ask a couple of questions:
Were these in Kodak cassettes labelled TMY2?
What did the outer cardboard boxes say?
Was this a recognised retailer of Kodak films?

Thanks

Was there a problem with the way the film captured the photograph? Lack of shadow detail or too much shadow detail? Blown out high lights? Are the exposures so acceptable that you never noticed the film difference?

My best guess at this point was it came from Pro Photo Supply in Portland, Oregon. I was chatting with the salesperson while clearing out their bin of Tri-X and at some point, most likely a customer, had tossed a roll of TMax in there. When we were headed to to coast a few weeks back, I reached in the ziplock bag and pulled out four or five rolls. As far as I knew, the only film stock I had was Tri-X and never really looked at the box or cassette. I just checked a few more rolls that are waiting to be developed and they are Tri-X. Since I assumed all of my film was Tri-X, that was what surprised me. That's what I get for assuming and it also explains the really fine gain on the one roll.

All the TMax - 400 in 135 I have on hand is bulk loaded.
But to me, that edge printing looks strange.
Shouldn't it be "400 TMY-2"?

No. I didn't notice anything different until I saw the edge markings. I was thinking I was getting pretty good at developing Tri-X in Rodinal!

Is there a film change in your future?

The rolls were developed in the same tank with a 50:1 dilution of Rodinal for 10 minutes at 20C. Exposure was ISO 200 witha 010 filter. Metering was with a Sekonic 308X in incident mode. Saw no difference in post processing.

I used TMax for years and developed it HC-110. I wanted a bit of a challenge.

That comes automatically when one enters the darkroom.

You may still be. It wouldn't be the first time I have seen the edge markings not match the film in the can. In my case it was a C41 film loaded in a Kodachrome can and edge marked "KR 64".

When I was at Pro Photo Supply cleaning out the last of the stock of Tri-X they had at that time, the salesperson pointed to their supply of HP5+. I thanked him and bought the Tri-X.

I've been shooting Kodak film since 1964, never had a film X in a film Y package. Ziploc bags are mixers.

I have put Ektachrome in my Fuji rangefinders and shot a roll only to discover that I had neglected to remove the medium yellow filter I was using for TMY-2 🤓🥺

I'd be surprised if the cassette and the film didn't match.
