I don't think it really matters unless you are using a staining developer. Then something like PMK specifies not to use a hardening fixer.

For most modern films, adding the hardener is unnecessary--and definitely not for TMAX films.
 
With modern emulsions, it will hurt you more than it helps you, IMO, as it will take more of your time and water. The way I see it, being able to wash your films with less water in less time is more important than hardening an emulsion unnecessarily "just to be on the safe side." Ilford say it is not needed, though they do make a hardener that can be added to their Hypam rapid fixer.
