TMAX 400 in 8x10"

Hi there,

maybe I missed something: I ordered in Brussels Kodak TMAX 400 8x10". They told me, this film is no longer produced by Kodak and no longer available. Does anybody know something about this? Is the film available in the States or esewhere?

Last I heard it was still available, though only in 10 sheet boxes.

Just bought two boxes. Also, just researched reciprocity failure table on Kodak data sheet -- if it were discontinued it would definitely be listed there. Still says available in 8x10 on the Kodak Q&A .pdf as well. The have been a lot of "false alarms" created by retailers and their employees who are not well informed about availability and/or discontinuance from the manufacturer. Seems like sometimes if a film is not on their shelves then it has been discontinued...

Calumet Belgium stopped offering film two years ago (in spite what their website says).

Yeah, but check the price. Un-flippin'-believable. The last 50 sheet box I bought was about $175.00. 5 of these ridiculous 10 sheet boxes will cost me $244.95 plus shipping.

I see that Freestyle also sells Ilford Delta Pro 100 Film in 25 sheet boxes of 8x10 for $82.99. I will definitely have to give that a try.

When they first announced the elimination of the 50 sheet boxes, I agreed with you. I even made the same statement you just did on this forum. But with that much of a price hike (most of which is probably packaging costs) I'm beginning to look elsewhere now. And nobody has been more of a 400TMax proponent than I have been. Kodak really is its own worst enemy.

Maybe we should all get together and request a special order from Kodak....25 or 50 sheet boxes at something closer to $4 per 8x10 sheet.......
Michael Kadillak had stated that Kodak would package TMY-2 in 25 sheet boxes.....about a year ago if I recall.....but nothing has happened yet. I've also noticed that Glazers is not doing much to push ULF sizes of TMY.....don't recall seeing anything in the last 4-6 months from Glazers.

Adorama ship Ilford film in 8x10 for free but i don't see them shipping Kodak film free.

Someone in another thread calculated that decades ago 8x10 sheet film cost the inflation-compensated equivalent of $9/sheet. I know what it's like to not be able to afford film as much as the next guy, but be careful about accusations of price gouging. Is film even expensive, from a historical perspective?

I didn't say they were gouging. I say they made a bad marketing decision in limiting the packaging options, thereby driving up costs.

There is a post on the LF forum that TMY-2 can't be found in sheets in Chicago. Something about photography students buying it all up. I recall in late 2007, that Kodak let the supply of TMY dwindle prior to introducing TMY-2. I remember, when Badger and B&H were out of stock for 8x10 TMY, I panicked and placed large orders with both of them. Wound up with a freezer shelf full of 8x10 when both orders arrived. I hadn't planned on THAT happening. Needless to say, I haven't yet tried TMY-2 and probably won't for a few more years.

I see this shortage as a good sign. If demand is exceeding supply for TMY in sheet film sizes that is a good thing. Or, perhaps Kodak is letting the supply of 10 sheet boxes dwindle prior to reintroducing 25 or 50 sheet boxes. One can always hope....

Moral of the story, you should purchase enough film to last you a year or two and when you get down to a six month supply, it's time to reorder. Between APUG and the LF forum, there have been a few posts by folks DESPERATE because they couldn't walk into their usual shop and pick up a box of their favorite emulsion in sheet film sizes.
In this economy EVERY retail business is practicing inventory control and let's face it, LF sheet film doesn't exactly sell a box-a-day.
