So I just got back my Rolleiflex from Oceanside Camera Repair this morning. They did a really great job getting the ol’ girl working nicely. As part of the repair, I had them install a new Maxwell viewing screen just for the hell of it.

Oh my goodness what a difference!! I never had much of a problem with the old Rollei screen but this new one is so bright and clear I am just blown away.

Now the viewing screen on my Mamiya C330, which is my main workhorse camera for most of my projects, seems downright dim by comparison so I’m thinking about upgrading that one too.

Does anyone know if they make Maxwell screens for the C330? More importantly, how do the Beattie screens compare?

You can call Bill Maxwell directly to ask him. I have heard that the Beattie is just as good. I have a Beattie in my Pentax 67 and it is just as bright near as I can tell.

Warning about talking to Bill Maxwell, he likes talking on the phone.

I had Maxwell install a screen on a Rolleicord Va: what an incredible upgrade in focus visibility.

Having just got a Hasselblad 500cm, I compared the brightness of that to my Automat, has me thinkIng about upgrading the screen. I missed the focus on a couple of shots lately in dim light.

Indeed, when I bought my 124G years ago I paid a little extra to get one of those screens it in. Compared to my Yashicamat LM, it is so amazingly different.

Congrats. The Maxwell is something that I'd like to see. When my Yashica Mat LM arrived this month, I took it to the corner of the living room away from the windows, and had no problem with afternoon focusing, indoors. It sounds like the Maxwell focuses well in low lighting.

I have a Beattie and a Maxwell. Both are great, but the Maxwell is more elegant, thus emphasizing the luminous image.

Indeed. For a while I would take my Maxwell fitted 124G loaded with color, and my non-maxwell LM loaded with black and white and do night photography. The difference was so great that I'd end up composing every scene with the 124G, and then switch cameras on the tri-pod before making the exposure if I needed the LM.
