There are "contests" where the people who run the scam will own the rights to all winners and also any photos that were entered no matter if they won or not. This is a rip-off and should be declared illegal.

The scary thing - its quite often well known organisations, including media outlets, that run these kinds of competitions.....

Due diligence is required before entering any contest. Some are rip-offs. Others are legitimate, offering the opportunity for exposure, an addition to your CV, prize money, and sales. The information you need to distinguish between the two can be found in the Call For Entries. Do your homework...
