The Tintype: History & Technique
March 5-7, 2012
George Eastman House International Museum of Photography & Film

Make your own tintype portraits and still-life images in this three-day workshop for beginners. Learn the basics of the 1850s wet collodion process used for making both tintypes (metal plates) and ambrotypes (glass plates). Mark Osterman teaches this informative and fun class in the same place where he taught the very first public collodion workshop back in 1995.

The class will include viewing antique tintypes, Ferrotypes, and Melainotypes from the Museum’s Photograph Collection. Participants receive a basic manual with full instructions and a listing of chemical suppliers.

Limited to 10 participants, this three-day workshop is suitable for curators, photograph conservators, historians, photographers, artists, and anyone interested in the evolution of the photographic print. No experience is necessary for this very hands-on workshop.

Tuition: $450 members, $475 non-members, plus $60 materials fee; extra-day option: $150.
